Jason Hafer, a camera operator who grew up in Petaluma, has been named a recipient of Hollywood’s Emerging Cinematographer Award for his work as the cinematographer on the short film “Incident on Highway 73.” The sci-fi movie has also garnered a dozen festival awards.

This is the 19th year that the 7,000-member International Cinematographers Guild has handed out the prize, awarded to guild members who are not classified as directors of photographer, but who perform that duty for the submitted film. Some eight short films were selected out of approximately 100 submissions.

Hafer’s fascination with the art of cinematography began while he was attending Casa Grande High School. He went on to obtain a degree in theater, TV and film from San Diego State University. He has worked on numerous films and TV shows, many of them with his friend Brian Thompson, who directed “Incident on Highway 73.”
